Before Rent, there was tick, tick… BOOM!

An aspiring composer questions his life choices on the eve of his thirtieth birthday in Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical rock musical. The Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winner tells the story of the sacrifices he made to achieve his big break in theatre.

His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue and yet Jon is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical. Set in 1990, this compelling story of personal discovery embraces the ideal of holding onto your dreams through life’s most difficult challenges.

Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors and a band, tick, tick… BOOM! takes you on the journey that led to a Broadway blockbuster.

REVIEWS

‘Bronagh Lagan, is quickly becoming one of the country’s most innovative and thoughtful directors. Indeed, she’s so far ahead of the game that, in a sense, we are playing catch-up with her, while her own imagination races ahead to create new types of response.

Not all directors are blessed with this extraordinary ability to ‘resonate’ with their public in this way, to continue the relationship between themselves, and their painstakingly assembled companies and elaborately constructed productions, and to reach beyond their allotted run and into the after-life of what happens when the production has closed.  I think maybe Lagan might be one of those remarkable directors.’

The Stage

★★★★

This is a lovingly crafted production that owes a lot to its composer, but just as much to its fantastic cast and creative team.

Theatre Weekly

★★★★★

The fast-paced direction from Bronagh Lagan maintains a high standard throughout…an energetic, explosive musical that doesn’t stop in pace for the whole ninety minutes.
